History of Frenchman Bay
Frenchman Bay was named by French explorer Bruni d'Entrecasteaux in 1792 during French exploration of the south coast. The bay later became central to Albany's whaling industry, with shore-based and later Cheynes Beach Whaling Station operations at Discovery Bay operating until 1978, now preserved as Albany's Historic Whaling Station museum.
Culture & Context
The area lies on the traditional land of the Menang people of the Noongar nation. The bay and King George Sound hold long-standing cultural significance for Noongar people and later became an important maritime and whaling locality for the Albany community.
