About Perth Observatory
Perth Observatory is a heritage-listed astronomical observatory located in Bickley in the Perth Hills, within the Shire of Kalamunda, Western Australia. Established in 1896 on Mount Eliza and relocated to Bickley in 1966 to escape light pollution, it is Western Australia's oldest observatory. Set in jarrah forest, it houses historic telescopes, museum displays and research facilities and operates guided day and night tours focused on astronomy education and stargazing.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a forested hilltop site with heritage telescope domes, museum displays and working observatory buildings. Access is by guided tour only, booked in advance. Day tours explore the history, instruments and museum, while night tours include an astronomy talk and viewing through telescopes weather permitting. The site is in a dark-sky location surrounded by bushland with limited lighting to preserve night-sky viewing.
