History of Ooty Lake
Ooty Lake was constructed in 1824 by John Sullivan, the first Collector of Coimbatore and founder of Ooty as a hill station. It was created by damming the mountain streams flowing through the Ooty valley. Originally extending over a larger area, the lake gradually shrank due to siltation and development but remains a historic man-made water body associated with the early British settlement of the Nilgiris.
Culture & Context
Ooty Lake is a central recreational and social hub for Udhagamandalam and a key attraction of Nilgiris tourism. Managed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, it hosts boating festivals and summer events and is an important leisure space for both residents and visitors to the hill station.
