History of Moti Mahal
Moti Mahal was initiated by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan (reigned 1798-1814) and completed by his son Ghazi-ud-Din Haider in the early 19th century as a palace and viewing pavilion overlooking the Gomti River. It formed part of the Nawabi riverfront palace ensemble including Chhatar Manzil. Later used during the British period, the complex reflects the late Nawabi architectural phase in Awadh before 1856.
Culture & Context
The palace exemplifies Awadhi architecture with its domes, cusped arches and riverfront planning, representing Lucknow's Nawabi cultural heritage. It is part of the central heritage zone that includes Imambaras and Chhatar Manzil, illustrating the city's historic urban and architectural character along the Gomti River.
