About Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary
Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is a privately owned wildlife sanctuary located at Samawang, about 38 km from Sandakan city in Sabah, Malaysia. Situated within an oil palm estate fringed by mangrove forest at Labuk Bay, it was established to protect the endemic proboscis monkey. It is notable for close-up observation of proboscis monkeys from elevated platforms during scheduled feeding times in a natural mangrove setting.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a mangrove and oil palm estate setting with elevated wooden observation platforms (Platform A and Platform B) overlooking feeding areas. Proboscis monkeys come close to the platforms during scheduled feeding sessions, along with silvered leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques and birds. The visit involves walking on boardwalks, waiting at viewing platforms, photography, and a small visitor centre with exhibits and refreshments.
