About Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facility in Sepilok, Sandakan, Sabah, dedicated to the conservation of the Malayan sun bear, the world's smallest bear species. Located within the Sepilok-Kabili Forest Reserve adjacent to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, it houses rescued bears in large forest enclosures. Established in 2008 and opened to visitors in 2014, it combines conservation, research, education and ecotourism through observation platforms and interpretive exhibits.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect elevated boardwalks and observation platforms overlooking large forested enclosures where rescued sun bears roam, forage, climb and rest in a natural rainforest setting within the Sepilok-Kabili Forest Reserve. The centre includes an indoor visitor centre with interpretive exhibits, educational displays and video presentations about sun bear biology and conservation. Viewing is primarily from shaded platforms, with opportunities for photography and guided explanations from staff.
