History of Kala Academy
Established on February 28, 1970, by the Government of Goa under the Registration of Societies Act, 1860, Kala Academy was created as an apex body to develop arts in the newly liberated territory. The building, constructed between 1973 and 1983, was Charles Correa's first major project in his native Goa and represents a significant example of post-colonial modern Indian architecture integrating local materials and spatial traditions.
Culture & Context
Kala Academy functions as Goa's premier institution for preserving and promoting diverse art forms including Hindustani classical music, Western classical music, Kathak, Bharatnatyam, drama, and folk arts. It operates faculties that train students in guru-shishya parampara and hosts major state-level festivals, tiatr competitions, and cultural events. The integration of Mario Miranda's art into the architecture creates a unique fusion of visual and performing arts that embodies Goan cultural identity.
