History of Dona Paula Viewpoint
Named after Dona Paula Amaral Antónia de Souto Maior, who arrived in Goa in 1744 and was related to the Portuguese Viceroy of Jaffnapatnam. She died on December 21, 1782, and the neighborhood, originally called Oddavell, was renamed in her honor due to her charitable work for villagers. The area also houses the Palacio do Cabo (now Raj Bhavan) and a historic British war-graves cemetery.
Culture & Context
Known locally as 'Lovers' Paradise' due to folklore surrounding Dona Paula's tragic romance. The 'Image of India' statue represents Mother India and Young India, symbolizing the blend of ancient culture and modern aspirations. The location has been featured in numerous Bollywood films including 'Ek Duuje Ke Liye' and 'Singham', cementing its status in Indian pop culture.
