History of Miramar Beach
Originally named Porta de Gaspar Dias by the Portuguese after a prosperous landlord, the beach was home to Forte da Ponte de Gasper Dias built in the late 16th century during the governorship of Viceroy Dom Francisco de Gama. Only ruins and an old cannon remain of the original fort structure today. The name Miramar derives from 'Miragem de Mar' (Mirage of the Sea), referencing a historic Hotel Miramar that once existed in the area.
