History of Brisbane Powerhouse
Constructed in 1927-1928 as the Brisbane Powerhouse to provide power for Brisbane's tram system. Designed in an industrial style, it was the largest power station in Queensland at the time. Decommissioned in 1971 after trams ceased, the building was derelict until Brisbane City Council redeveloped it as an arts centre, opening in 2000. It is listed on the Brisbane Heritage Register as an example of interwar industrial architecture and adaptive reuse.
