About Breakaways Conservation Park
Breakaways Conservation Park is an arid protected area located about 32 kilometres north of Coober Pedy in South Australia. Managed jointly by the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Corporation and the South Australian Government, it is renowned for its colourful flat-topped mesas, stony desert gibber plains and dramatic escarpments. The landscape was once covered by an inland sea and holds strong cultural significance for its Traditional Owners.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a vast arid desert landscape of colourful low mesas and buttes with white, yellow and red banded hills rising from stony gibber plains. The park is accessed via an unsealed loop road with designated lookout points offering panoramic views over the Breakaways escarpment, the Dog Fence and the Moon Plain. There are no built structures beyond lookouts and an information shelter. The environment is remote, exposed and treeless, with opportunities for scenic driving, photography and nature appreciation.
