About Umoona Opal Mine and Museum
Umoona Opal Mine and Museum is an underground museum and former opal mine on Hutchison Street in Coober Pedy, South Australia. Located in the heart of Australia's opal capital, it preserves the town's opal mining heritage since 1915. The attraction combines an original mine, Aboriginal interpretive display, historic exhibits and an opal shop, offering insight into mining life and local culture.
Visitors guide
Visitors enter an underground complex built within a former opal mine. Expect low-lit tunnels and dugout rooms displaying opal specimens, historic mining equipment, photographs and Aboriginal artefacts. A guided tour explains opal formation and mining methods, followed by a short film in the underground theatre. Areas include the mine workings, interpretive centre, and retail gallery for opals and jewellery. The underground environment remains cool year-round.
