History of Yeppoon
The Yeppoon area is traditionally part of Darumbal Country. European settlement began in the 1860s with pastoral runs and later sugar and pineapple farming. The town developed as a seaside resort for Rockhampton residents from the late 19th century, with the establishment of the Yeppoon jetty, railway connection via Sleipner Junction, and growth as the mainland service centre for the Keppel Islands.
Culture & Context
Yeppoon is within the traditional lands of the Darumbal people, the traditional owners of the Capricorn Coast. The town reflects a coastal Queensland lifestyle centred on beach culture, fishing and island connections, and hosts community markets, events and public art along the foreshore that celebrate its maritime identity.
