History of Capricorn Caves
The caves were discovered in 1882 by Norwegian settler John Olsen and opened to visitors in 1884, making them one of Queensland's longest-operating tourist cave systems. Early tours were conducted by candlelight and the site has been privately managed by the Olsen family for generations, with ongoing conservation and tourism development.
Culture & Context
The caves are located on the traditional lands of the Darumbal people. Today they serve as an educational and tourism site showcasing natural heritage, geology and local history, and the Cathedral Cave is culturally notable as a venue for weddings and acoustic music events.
