History of Willingdon Island
Created in 1936 by engineer Robert Bristow using soil dredged from Vembanad Lake during the construction of modern Cochin Port. Named after Lord Willingdon, the Viceroy of India who commissioned the project. During World War II, the island served as a Royal Navy base (HMS Garuda) and RAF aerodrome. It became a vital strategic hub for British military operations and post-independence evolved into Kochi's commercial heart.
Culture & Context
The island represents British colonial engineering achievement and maritime heritage. It houses the Cochin Port Maritime Heritage Museum documenting the port's evolution from the 1920s. The island symbolizes Kochi's transformation into a major international trade center and continues to serve as an important naval and commercial establishment.
