About Chinese Fishing Nets
Chinese Fishing Nets are historic shore-operated lift nets located along the Fort Kochi coastline in Kerala. Introduced by Chinese explorer Zheng He between 1350 and 1450 AD, these massive cantilevered structures stand approximately 10 meters high with nets extending over 20 meters into the sea. Operated by teams of fishermen using counterweight systems, they represent a unique fishing technique found only in Kochi and China. Today they serve as iconic tourist attractions and symbols of Fort Kochi's maritime heritage.
Visitors guide
Visitors can observe large cantilevered fishing nets suspended over the waters along the Fort Kochi beachfront. The nets operate using a balance system where fishermen pull ropes to lower and raise the nets into the sea. Teams of up to six fishermen demonstrate the traditional operation method. Visitors can watch the slow rhythmic movement of the nets, particularly striking at sunset when silhouetted against the sky. Fresh catches may be available for purchase from nearby vendors who can cook them on the spot.

History of Chinese Fishing Nets
Introduced by Chinese explorer Zheng He from the court of Kubla Khan between 1350 and 1450 AD. These stationary lift nets represent one of the few places outside China where this traditional fishing technique exists. The nets have been operating on Kochi shores for over 500 years and have become synonymous with Fort Kochi's identity.
Culture & Context
The Chinese Fishing Nets symbolize the historical trade connections between Kochi and China. Locally known as 'Cheena Vala', they represent centuries of coastal life and maritime heritage. The name Kochi itself may derive from 'co-chin' meaning 'like China'. These nets have become iconic symbols of Fort Kochi and Kerala's rich cultural heritage.
