History of Walhalla Goldfields Railway
The original Moe to Walhalla narrow-gauge line opened in 1910 to serve the Walhalla gold mining town, one of Victoria's richest goldfields. Built as a 2 ft 6 in gauge branch line through difficult mountain terrain, it operated until 1944 when mining declined and the line closed. The section between Walhalla and Thomson was progressively rebuilt by the Walhalla Goldfields Railway volunteers from 1994 as a tourist railway, preserving the goldfields rail heritage.
Culture & Context
The railway preserves and interprets the transport heritage of Victoria's gold mining era and the community history of Walhalla. Operated by volunteers, it maintains narrow-gauge railway skills and provides a cultural attraction that supports heritage tourism in the historic Walhalla township.
