History of Vedagiriswarar Temple
Vedagiriswarar Temple is an ancient temple with origins attributed to the Pallava period and later expansions by the Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagara dynasties. It is celebrated in the 7th-8th century Tevaram hymns by Tamil Saivite saints Appar, Sambandar, Sundarar and Manikkavasagar as a Paadal Petra Sthalam. Inscriptions on temple walls record endowments and renovations by medieval rulers. The hill itself is traditionally identified as Vedagiri, where the four Vedas are believed to have worshipped Shiva.
Culture & Context
The temple is dedicated to Shiva as Vedagiriswarar (Lord of the Veda Hill) and Goddess Parvati as Thiripurasundari, and is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams highly revered in Shaivism. The hill is considered sacred as the embodiment of the Vedas, and the Sangu Theertham tank is believed to have been created by Brahma. The temple was traditionally associated with the legend of two eagles visiting daily to be fed by priests, a ritual that attracted pilgrims for centuries.
