History of Kovalam Beach
Kovalam has been a favorite tourist destination since the 1930s when Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore built Halcyon Castle as a beach resort. The Vizhinjam Lighthouse was established in 1972, replacing earlier beacons that had assisted vessels entering the natural fishing harbor since the 18th-19th centuries when Vizhinjam was a flourishing port.
Culture & Context
Kovalam is known for showcasing Kerala's cultural heritage through special traditional performances including Kathakali and Mohiniyattam dance forms. The nearby Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple, an ancient Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, reflects the region's rich cultural and religious heritage.
