History of Varadaraja Perumal Temple
The temple's origins are traced to the Cholas in the 11th century, with major expansions by later Cholas and Vijayanagara kings in the 14th-16th centuries. Inscriptions record patronage by Kulottunga Chola I and Vijayanagara rulers. The temple is associated with philosopher-saint Ramanuja who is believed to have studied here. The 100-pillared hall and gopurams exemplify Vijayanagara art and Dravidian temple architecture.
