History of Vadnagar Heritage Town
Vadnagar, ancient Anandapura/Anartapura, shows evidence of continuous human habitation for over 2500 years from around 8th century BCE. Excavations reveal seven cultural layers from Mauryan, Indo-Greek, Indo-Scythian, Gupta, Maitraka, Solanki and Sultanate periods. The town was a major Buddhist centre with a monastery dating to 7th century CE, and later a Solanki-era fortified town with Kirti Toran and fort walls. It is included on UNESCO's Tentative List as an archaeological and historic town.
