History of Udaya Samudram Reservoir
The reservoir was originally constructed during the 11th-12th century under the Kakatiya dynasty and Chola rulers. In 1124 CE, Udayaraju of the Chola dynasty built a large water tank northeast of Panagal town. Historic texts refer to this reservoir as Udaya Samudram. The Kakatiyas later expanded the tank as part of their extensive public infrastructure development. The reservoir has evolved through modern times and is now integrated with the Srisailam project as a balancing reservoir.
Culture & Context
The reservoir holds cultural importance as part of Panagal's heritage as a former capital of several dynasties between the 9th and 13th centuries. It represents the advanced water management systems developed by medieval South Indian kingdoms and continues to serve the local community for irrigation and drinking water supply.
