About Tom's Working Opal Mine
Tom's Working Opal Mine is a working underground opal mine and guided tour attraction on Hutchison Street in Coober Pedy, South Australia. Located in the heart of Australia's opal capital, it offers visitors insight into traditional opal mining methods still in use today. The site features an underground mine, opal displays and noodling areas, illustrating the town's mining heritage and the geology of the Coober Pedy opal fields.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a guided underground tour of a genuine working opal mine accessed via stairs and tunnels. The tour shows opal seams in the walls, historic and modern mining equipment, and demonstrations of mining techniques. Above and below ground there are opal displays, a noodling (fossicking) area where visitors can search for opal fragments, and a shop selling opals and jewellery. The underground environment is cool and dimly lit with low ceilings and uneven surfaces.
