About Thoothukudi Salt-Pan Landscape
The Thoothukudi Salt-Pan Landscape is an extensive network of salt evaporation pans along the Gulf of Mannar coast near Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Spread over thousands of acres, it is one of India's largest salt-producing areas. The geometric white salt beds, shallow brine channels and mounds of harvested salt create a distinctive landscape notable for its scale, traditional solar evaporation methods and seasonal migratory bird activity.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect vast, flat expanses of shallow rectangular salt pans filled with brine in varying shades of white and pink, separated by narrow earthen bunds. Mounds of harvested salt, workers engaged in raking and collecting salt, and shallow water channels are visible from roadside viewpoints. The area is open and exposed with little shade, offering wide panoramic views, opportunities for photography and birdwatching, particularly of waders and flamingos in winter.
