About Thajiwas Glacier
Thajiwas Glacier is a small valley glacier located about 3 km from Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, Jammu and Kashmir, at an altitude of around 9,186 feet (2,800 m) in the Himalayas. Fed by snow from surrounding peaks, it remains snow-covered for most of the year. Notable for its easy accessibility via a short trek or pony ride from Sonamarg, it offers snow slopes, meltwater streams and panoramic mountain scenery, making it a popular day excursion from Srinagar.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a 3 km trek or pony and sledge ride from Sonamarg market through alpine meadows to the glacier snout. The site features snow and ice fields even in summer, small meltwater streams and surrounding snow-capped peaks. There are no permanent structures at the glacier itself; seasonal tea stalls, sledge operators and pony stands operate near the base. Visitors can walk on snow, enjoy sledging and photography, and view the valley. Terrain is uneven, steep and often slushy, requiring warm clothing and sturdy footwear.
