About Tcharkuldu Rock
Tcharkuldu Rock is a large granite inselberg located near Minnipa in the District Council of Wudinna on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula. Formed over 1,500 million years ago, the dome-shaped outcrop rises prominently from flat agricultural land and features wave-like walls, water catchment structures and panoramic views. It is notable for its geological formation, historic water supply role and Aboriginal cultural associations, and is a key stop on the region's granite trail.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a massive dome-shaped granite rock rising from surrounding farmland with smooth, wave-patterned walls, flat summit areas and 360-degree views over the Eyre Peninsula plains. The site has a gravel car park at the base, interpretive signage, picnic tables and low historic stone catchment walls that channelled rainwater to a dam. Visitors can walk around the base and scramble over the rock surface to explore gnammas (rock holes), weathered formations and open granite slabs.

History of Tcharkuldu Rock
The granite is part of the Hiltaba Suite formed about 1,580 million years ago. In the early 20th century, low stone walls were constructed around the base to harvest rainwater runoff into a holding dam, providing a vital water supply for the Minnipa and Wudinna district before reticulated water was available.
Culture & Context
The rock and its natural waterholes have cultural significance for Aboriginal peoples of the Eyre Peninsula, including Barngarla and Wirangu groups, as a traditional water source and landmark within the landscape. It is valued today for its natural and cultural heritage alongside nearby granite outcrops.
