History of Tasik Biru (Blue Lake)
Tasik Biru is a flooded open-cast gold mine that reflects Bau's history as Sarawak's principal gold mining centre since the 1840s. Gold mining was developed by Chinese miners and later by the Borneo Company Limited under the Brooke administration. After mining operations ceased, the pit filled with water to form the present lake, which retains high mineral and arsenic content from mining activity.
Culture & Context
The lake is a cultural landmark symbolizing Bau's gold mining heritage and the legacy of the Chinese mining community that settled in the district. It is a central recreational and social space for the local community and a point of interest for visitors learning about Sarawak's mining history.
