History of Surin City Pillar Shrine
The city of Surin was established in 1763 by Luang Surin Phakdi (Chiang Pum), later Phraya Surin Phakdi Si Narong Changwang. The City Pillar Shrine was later erected to enshrine the Sao Lak Mueang, the symbolic foundation post of the provincial capital, following Thai tradition of marking the establishment and prosperity of a city. The present shrine structure reflects later renovations in traditional Thai style and serves as the historical marker of the city foundation.
