History of Sukhadia Circle
Sukhadia Circle was built in 1968 and opened to the public in 1970. It was constructed in memory of Late Shri Mohan Lal Sukhadia, former Chief Minister of Rajasthan (serving from 1954 to 1971) and a native of Udaipur. He is widely regarded as the architect of modern Rajasthan and played a pivotal role in post-independence state integration and development, particularly in education and rural reforms. The site was originally a simple traffic circle in the Panchwati area before being developed into a recreational space.
Culture & Context
The fountain's design features a wheat-ear motif at the top, symbolizing prosperity and good harvest, reflecting Rajasthan's agricultural heritage. The circle has become the cultural and social heart of Udaipur's northern promenade zone, serving as a beloved gathering place where locals and tourists come together. It represents civic pride and the blend of modern urban planning with traditional Rajasthani values. The area is particularly significant during festivals like Diwali, Holi, and the Mewar Festival when it is decorated with special lights and becomes a celebration hub.
