History of Fateh Sagar Lake
Originally constructed by Maharana Jai Singh in 1678, the lake's earthen bund was washed away by floods two centuries later. Maharana Fateh Singh rebuilt it in 1889, constructing the Connaught Dam to commemorate the visit of Duke of Connaught, son of Queen Victoria. The lake was subsequently renamed Fateh Sagar Lake in his honor.
Culture & Context
The lake is one of four major lakes in Udaipur and has earned the city the nickname 'second Kashmir' due to its scenic beauty. It hosts the annual Hariyali Amavasya Mela (Green New Moon Fair) in August or September and serves as a venue for cultural events including music festivals.
