About Submerged Shivling Gangotri
The Submerged Shivling at Gangotri is a natural rock formation in the Bhagirathi River near Gangotri Temple in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. Revered as a self-manifested Shivling, it remains underwater for most of the year and becomes visible when river levels recede in winter. Located in the Himalayan pilgrimage town of Gangotri, it holds religious importance for devotees of Lord Shiva and is visited alongside the Gangotri Temple during the Char Dham pilgrimage season.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect to see a natural Shivling-shaped rock submerged in the clear waters of the Bhagirathi River, just adjacent to the Gangotri Temple complex. The Shivling is visible only when water levels are low, typically in winter, and remains submerged during summer and monsoon. The setting is a high-Himalayan riverbank with rocky terrain, temple ghats, prayer areas and views of surrounding peaks. Visitors view the formation from the riverbank and temple steps without entering the water.
