History of Stanley Heritage Walk
Stanley was established in 1826 as Circular Head by the Van Diemen's Land Company, the first major European settlement in north-west Tasmania. The town developed as a port and company headquarters, with Highfield House built as the manager's residence. Many surviving cottages, stores and churches date from the 1830s to 1890s, reflecting colonial maritime and agricultural history.
Culture & Context
The walk preserves and interprets one of Tasmania's most intact 19th-century port villages, showcasing colonial architecture, maritime heritage and the legacy of the Van Diemen's Land Company settlement. It reflects the cultural identity of Stanley as a historic fishing village.
