History of Sri Aurobindo Ashram
Sri Aurobindo, philosopher and yogi, arrived in Puducherry in 1910 and began spiritual practice with a small group of disciples. The Ashram was formally founded on 24 November 1926. Mirra Alfassa, known as The Mother, took charge of its organization and development, expanding its departments and establishing the principles of Integral Yoga. The Samadhi enshrines the mortal remains of both Sri Aurobindo (d. 1950) and The Mother (d. 1973).
