History of Promenade Beach (Rock Beach)
The promenade was developed during French colonial rule as Goubert Avenue, named after Francois Gaubert. The seafront was fortified with boulders to protect the town from sea erosion. Landmarks such as the Old Lighthouse (1836), French War Memorial (1938) and statues of Dupleix and Gandhi reflect French and post-independence history.

Promenade Beach is the central public leisure space of Puducherry, used daily by residents and visitors for morning walks, yoga and evening gatherings. It hosts national commemorations at the War Memorial and Gandhi Statue and reflects the city's French-Tamil cultural blend in its architecture and streetscape.
