History of Rommaninat Park
The park occupies the site of the former Bangkok Remand Prison, originally built in 1890 during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) as part of modern corrections reforms. The prison operated for over a century until it was relocated in 1992. The site was then developed into a public park and opened in 1999 to commemorate the 72nd birthday anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), preserving a section of the prison walls, watchtower and cell blocks as the Bangkok Corrections Museum.
Culture & Context
The park serves as a green recreational space in Bangkok's historic Rattanakosin Island area and preserves built heritage of Thailand's early modern prison architecture. The Corrections Museum within the park presents the history of the Thai corrections system and is used for educational visits, while the park itself is a community space for exercise and leisure in the Old City.
