History of Rivona Caves
The caves date to the 6th or 7th century CE and served as meditation chambers for Buddhist monks, providing evidence of Buddhism's historical presence in Goa. They are also linked to Pandava mythology in local tradition. The site was originally known as 'Rishi Van' (forest of sages) and represents one of few examples of Buddhist rock-cut architecture in the state.
Culture & Context
Rivona Caves hold dual cultural significance as both a Buddhist archaeological site and a location embedded in Hindu Pandava legends. The name 'Rivona' derives from 'Rishi Van,' reflecting its association with ancient sages. The caves remain a religious and heritage landmark for local communities in South Goa.
