History of Prabhasgiri
Prabhasgiri at Pabhosa is traditionally associated with the 6th Jain Tirthankara, Padmaprabha, believed to have been born and attained ascetic knowledge here. The hill contains rock-cut Jain caves and Brahmi inscriptions dated to the Shunga period (2nd-1st century BCE) and later periods, indicating long-standing Jain monastic use. Archaeological findings link the area to the ancient city of Kaushambi, an important centre in early Indian history.
Culture & Context
The hill is an important Jain pilgrimage site, particularly for the Shwetambara and Digambara communities, who visit to pay homage to Padmaprabha. Annual Jain festivals and pilgrimages are observed here. The site also holds local cultural value as a scenic and spiritual landmark overlooking the Yamuna, visited by devotees and heritage travellers.
