About Kaushambi Archaeological Ruins
Kaushambi Archaeological Ruins are the remains of the ancient city of Kaushambi located at Kosam Inam village in Kaushambi District, Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Yamuna River. Once the capital of the Vatsa kingdom, the site features extensive fortification walls, palace remains, and Buddhist monasteries including Ghoshitarama. Excavations have revealed artifacts from 1200 BCE to the Gupta period, with an Ashokan pillar marking its historical importance as a major early urban and Buddhist centre.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a large open archaeological park with exposed brick fortification walls, bastions, palace complex foundations, and remains of Buddhist monasteries such as Ghoshitarama. The site is situated on the Yamuna riverbank with mounds, excavated structures, and an Ashokan pillar fragment.
