History of Poovar Backwaters
Poovar was an ancient trading center for timber, sandalwood, ivory, and spices. It is believed to be identified as Ophir, where ships of King Solomon of Israel landed. The village was one of the ancient Muslim settlements along India's western coast, with the central mosque built by Malik Deenar in the eighth century. During the Chola dynasty, Poovar served as a major port. The area has trade connections mentioned by Megasthenes, Pliny the Elder, and Marco Polo. In the 18th century, merchant Pokku Moosa Maraikkar provided shelter to Marthanda Varma, king of Travancore, and the name Poovar derives from Malayalam words for flower and river.
