History of Paronella Park
Built between 1929 and 1935 by Spanish immigrant José Paronella who purchased 13 acres beside Mena Creek Falls in 1929. He constructed a Spanish-inspired castle, grand staircase, tunnels, bridges, tennis court and hydroelectric plant to create a public pleasure garden and entertainment venue opened in 1935. Damaged by cyclones, floods and fire over decades, it was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2010 as a rare example of interwar migrant enterprise and North Queensland tourism development.
Culture & Context
Recognized as a Queensland heritage-listed cultural landscape reflecting Spanish-influenced design and the vision of a migrant entrepreneur in Tropical North Queensland. It demonstrates 1930s recreation and tourism aspirations and retains extensive interwar plantings and structures valued for their historic and aesthetic significance.
