History of Millaa Millaa Falls
The falls and township are named after the Millaa Millaa vine (Elaeagnus triflora) that fruits in the area. The Atherton Tablelands was opened for closer settlement in the early 20th century, with Millaa Millaa established as a dairy farming community. The falls later gained national prominence through tourism promotion and use as a filming location for advertisements and other productions.
Culture & Context
The Atherton Tablelands is traditionally part of the lands of rainforest Aboriginal peoples including Dyirbal-speaking groups. The falls and surrounding rainforest are valued for their natural heritage and form a central feature of the Tablelands Waterfall Circuit promoted for nature-based tourism.
