History of Panshet Dam
Constructed in the late 1950s for irrigation and water supply, Panshet Dam suffered a catastrophic breach on July 12, 1961, during its first year of operation due to lack of RCC reinforcement in the conduit. The failure caused massive flooding in Pune with an estimated death toll of around 1,000 people. The dam was subsequently reconstructed and remains a critical part of Pune's water infrastructure.
