History of Nong Khai Railway Station
The Nong Khai line was opened in 1955 as the extension of the Northeastern Line to the Mekong border. The original Nong Khai station was closer to the town centre. In 2008 a new station was built about 1.5 km closer to the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge (opened 1994) to facilitate international rail traffic, with the cross-border extension to Thanaleng, Laos inaugurated in March 2009 and later extended to Vientiane (Khamsavath) in 2023-2024.
Culture & Context
The station functions as Thailand's principal northeastern rail gateway and a symbol of Thai-Lao connectivity across the Mekong River. It supports cross-border trade, tourism and cultural exchange between Thailand and Laos and is a key transit point for travelers visiting Nong Khai's Mekong riverfront and Buddhist sites.
