About Monfort Bat Sanctuary
Monfort Bat Sanctuary is a protected cave sanctuary in Barangay Tambo, Babak District, Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte, Philippines. It houses the world's largest colony of Geoffrey's Rousette fruit bats (Rousettus amplexicaudatus), with an estimated 1.8 to 2.3 million individuals, recognized by Guinness World Records. Owned and managed by the Monfort family, the sanctuary focuses on conservation, education, and regulated viewing from outside five cave entrances.
Visitors guide
Visitors view millions of fruit bats roosting inside five connected cave entrances from designated viewing decks and fenced observation areas outside the caves. The site is set in a forested karst area with a small visitor centre, interpretive displays, and guided commentary on bat ecology and conservation. Entry into the caves is not permitted. The main experience is observing the bats at rest during the day and watching mass emergence at dusk.
