History of Mission Beach
The area is traditionally Djiru Country. The name Mission Beach derives from the Hull River Aboriginal Settlement, an Aboriginal mission established in 1914 at Hull River near present-day South Mission Beach, which was destroyed by a cyclone in 1918. The town later developed as a coastal agricultural and tourism centre.
Culture & Context
Mission Beach lies within Djiru Country and holds cultural significance for Djiru Traditional Owners. The southern cassowary is culturally significant and is an emblem of the region, with community conservation efforts focused on protecting its rainforest habitat.
