Construction began in 2005 as part of the Jalayagnam program, with foundation stone laid earlier in 1991 by former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao as part of SRSP Stage-II. The project was completed in April 2018 after delays, with a final cost of ₹2050 crores. It took 10 years to complete 50% of the work and only 10 months to complete the remaining 50%.
Culture & Context
The dam holds significance for agricultural communities as it irrigates 200,000 acres. A boat service operates to Sri Dattatreya Swamy temple located atop a hillock in the backwaters. The gate opening ceremony during monsoon is celebrated as Jalam Utsavam by local communities.
