About Mataranka Falls
Mataranka Falls is a small spring-fed waterfall on the Waterhouse River within Elsey National Park near the town of Mataranka in the Northern Territory. Located in the Roper Gulf region, it is formed by tufa terraces created by mineral-rich thermal spring water. The falls are notable for their rainforest-fringed setting, clear pools and easy walking access, offering a quieter alternative to the nearby thermal pools within the same park.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a short walk through monsoon forest and palm-lined riverine vegetation to a low, terraced tufa waterfall on the Waterhouse River. The setting is shaded and tranquil with clear spring-fed water flowing over limestone terraces into shallow pools. There are viewing areas and a walking track from the car park. The site is primarily for sightseeing, photography and nature appreciation rather than swimming, and is quieter than the main thermal pools in Elsey National Park.
