About Elsey Cemetery
Elsey Cemetery is a heritage-listed historic cemetery located on Homestead Road at Elsey, about 21 kilometres south of Mataranka in the Roper Gulf region of the Northern Territory. Established to serve Elsey Station, it contains graves of early pastoral pioneers including Aeneas Gunn, whose story inspired Jeannie Gunn's classic book We of the Never Never. Set in open savanna woodland, the fenced cemetery preserves headstones and bush graves reflecting early 20th-century frontier life.
