History of Mary Valley Rattler
The Mary Valley railway line was constructed between 1911 and 1915 to connect Gympie to Brooloo to support dairying, agriculture and timber industries. Regular services declined and the line closed to regular traffic in 1995. Community efforts preserved it as the Mary Valley Heritage Railway from 1998, and after major restoration it relaunched as the Mary Valley Rattler in 2018, preserving Queensland's steam rail heritage and the C17 class locomotive.
Culture & Context
The railway preserves Queensland's steam-era rail heritage and the cultural identity of the Mary Valley communities. It serves as a heritage tourism attraction that maintains historic rolling stock, station buildings and rail skills, and supports local communities at Gympie, Dagun, Amamoor and Imbil.
