History of Marks Park
The park lies on land traditionally associated with the Bidjigal and Birrabirragal people of the Eora Nation. The headland includes Mackenzies Point, named after the Mackenzie family who operated a fishing and boating presence in the early 20th century. The surrounding coastline was also the site of Wonderland City, an early 1900s amusement park at Tamarama. The reserve was later dedicated as public parkland within the Waverley municipality.
Culture & Context
Marks Park is culturally significant as a major public open space on Sydney's eastern coastline and as the principal outdoor venue for Sculpture by the Sea, one of Australia's largest free public sculpture exhibitions held annually in spring. It is also valued for its Aboriginal heritage and its role as a scenic landmark on the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk.
